Lega, Democratic Republic of Congo Wood. 8.25" H x 3.5" W x 4.5" D
This compact mask is often called a "passport mask" as it would be carried with a tribal leader when he traveled––both to identify his tribe, and to bring along the powers inherent to the mask. This example is a soft brown with with golden kaolin (clay) and the distinctive, slit eyes and small mouth of the Lega mask. It also still wears its original raffia beard––a feature coveted by many collectors. We acquired it from the collection of a missionary, who purchased it in 1963.
