The Dogon people are one of the most ancient, mysterious and complex tribes of Africa. Residents of remote and rugged areas in Mali, they nevertheless developed many sophisticated astronomical, medical, and mythical systems. Each Dogon mask corresponds to "tiers" of training with the elders young men go through as they transition to manhood, and holds significance in their development as a complete tribal member. This hybrid bird masks combines bird and human aspects. The zigzag incised lines are a particular Dogon design element.
