Henry Flagler's iconic Florida East Coast Railway extension project was an ambitious undertaking to connect Key West to the mainland, beginning in 1905 and completed in 1912. Described as the "eighth wonder of the world" for it's ambitious engineering. Destroyed in 1935 by a major hurricane, it was subsequently converted into the overseas highway.
