The art of encaustic painting, using wax and pigment to make images, began in ancient Greece over 2000 years ago.
It was originally developed in the 5th century to weatherproof and decorate ships. The ancient Greeks adapted the technique to paint portraits and scenes. Encaustic painting was replaced by egg tempera and later oil paints and encaustic painting techniques were lost.

Recently the technique has been rediscovered and revived.
This piece by Ashley Kamen was made by embedding a historic image of old Key West in layers of fused wax.
