African currency pieces were used both for major purchases (land, animals, dowries) and to signify a transfer of wealth at major events, such as a coming of age ceremony or upon a death. This graceful collar demonstrates the "perfect form" associated with African currency. Its beautiful patina developed over years of use, as wives would often wear these collars permanently to demonstrate wealth. The Yoruba people, concentrated in Western Nigeria, are known for their excellent craftsmanship. We at Archeo personally travel to handpick each piece in the gallery, or buy from existing, accredited collectors.
