African currency pieces were used both for major purchases (of land, animals, or dowries for example) and to signify a transfer of wealth at major events, such as a coming of age ceremony, or death. Most forms developed from traditional and useful metal objects like tools, weapons, bracelets or anklets. And although some continued to be functional for work or decoration, most evolved into "pure" currency, deliberately unusable except as form of payment. This knife currency comes from the Matakam people of the Mandara Mountains of northern Nigeria. We at Archeo personally travel to handpick each piece in the gallery, or buy from existing, accredited collectors.
