An example of a Sarab rug, from the northwestern region of ancient Perisa (the southern part of present day Armenia), this rug features the recognizable open plane of color (warm gold) and geometric shapes and designs that are unique to each village. An older example of Sarab, such as this from circa 1920, would have been vegetable dyed and created by a woman (whereas today, the weavers tend to be men). Many Sarab designs also contain secret meanings and messages, lost to us through history and translation, but infusing this rug with an element of mystery.
