Either Dogon (or Bamana) Mali 19.5"H x 15" W X 4 deep, with base
Door locks are created by West African people with reverence to the spirits. The sliding crossbar secures a granary door and the carving itself reveals the social standing of its owner. While the head suggests a bird reference and the body could be observed as human on this piece, the representation is highly abstract. We appreciate it for its strong, beautiful aesthetic as a sculpture. Experts cannot agree on whether this lock is Dogon or Bamana.
