The Dogon are one of the most ancient, mysterious and complex tribes. Residents of remote and rugged areas in Mali, they have nevertheless developed sophisticated astronomical, medical, and mythical systems. In the harsh, arid environments they live in, wood is a precious material and is used primarily for useful art pieces, such as doors. The beautifully carved doors cover granaries, and display creative expression as well as records of tribal legends. This lock from a door depicts a reptile body, representing the creator, Nommo.
