Kpeenble are a hereditary group of women potters within the Senufo people, who use a combination of techniques (hand-forming, coil, and elementary wheel). Large, round vessels such as this one are given to brides, and become the central feature in the main room of a Senufo living compound. In addition to drinking water, they hold medicinal herbs believed to offer protection to travelers who stop for a drink. The natural patina and markings on this pot have been left untouched, evidence of the object's authenticity and quiet history of use.
