Even door locks are created by the Dogon people with reverence to the spirits. The sliding crossbar is be used to secure a granary door, and the lock on the right side indicates a Dogon artifact. The etching design reflects Islamic patterns, and while the head suggests a bird reference and the body could be observed as human (hence the name “bird man”) the representation is highly abstract. Dogon show social standing, wealth, and representations of the ancestors through their carvings.
