Indigo is the only dye the Qashqai buy or trade for––all others deriving from materials they find in their surroundings. It is, thus, highly prized and implemented carefully. Every last drop of color makes it to a dye bath, as is evident in this Gabbeh example. The deep, midnight blue represents the first dye bath, while the faintest cloud blue represents the last.  All shades have been structured into this sculptural design, which represents the best of indigo, as well as the best of the Gabbeh form.
